HISTORY OF CBIP

Central Board of Irrigation and Power, is a Premier Institution set up by the Government of India in the 1927. CBIP has been rendering dedicated services to the professional organization, engineers and individuals in the country related to Power, Water Resources and Renewable Energy Sectors for the last 90 years. CBIP has grown into an eminent organization of international importance while serving the nation equally with great distinction. CBIP is Indian chapter for 10 international organizations related to Power & Water resources sectors.

Today, Central Board of Irrigation and Power presents a shining example of a pioneer organization and has enabled Indian industry to set higher benchmarks and attain international standards in excellence by creating a unique platform for growth and development of Power, water Resources and Renewable Energy Sectors.

It is a knowledge bank and an exchange for dissemination of experience and technical knowledge.

ACTIVITIES & SERVICES

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • CBIP had been coordinating and monitoring R&D activities, assisting in specific case studies/problems, documentation and dissemination of the results/findings of Research Projects to the practising engineers under the Research Scheme on Power – (RSOP),Research Scheme on River Valley Projects (RSRVP), Research Scheme on Flood Control (RSFC) and Research Scheme on Plasticulture Development (RSPD). Funds for Research Schemes under RSRVP and RSFC were provided by Ministry of Water Resources and for RSOP by Ministry of Power.
  • The results of the research conducted at the various Water Resources and Power Research Stations in the country were discussed in CBIP Annual Research Sessions. Now R&D sessions are organised by CBIP every two years.

DISSEMINATION OF TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE THROUGH PUBLICATIONS

  • The Board publishes Technical Literature and journals including manuals, guidelines, specifications, etc., (related to the fields of Water Resources, Power and Renewable Energy Sectors)
  • Till date about 1500 Technical publications have been brought out by CBIP.
  • CBIP is publishing “monthly” issue of Water and Energy International Journal, covering special features on development and management of the activities in water resources, power and renewable energy sectors.
  • Indian Chapters of various International Socities such as ICOLD, ITA, IWRA, ISRM, IGS, WWC, CIGRE, AARO, IASH, SPE and INHA having Secretaritat in CBIP are also bringing out half-yearly journals.
  • Old publications/Manuals are also reviewed and updated periodically.
  • The manuals of CBIP are broadly refferred/quoted by the manufactures/utilities in the country and abroad.

DISSEMINATION OF KNOWLEDGE THROUGH NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES

  • The Annual Session of the Board held in November 1936 was inaugurated by His Excellency the Viceroy Lord Linlithgow.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India had inaugurated the Board Sessions in 1948, 1952, 1953 & 1958.
  • 30th Annual Session of Board held in November 1959 was inaugurated by Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India.
  • Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India inaugurated the Board Session in 1967 and World Water Congress in 1975.
  • Golden Jubilee of CBIP Session was inaugurated by Late Shri B.D. Jatti, the then Acting President of India in 1977.
  • The Thirteenth Congress on Large Dams celebrated as Golden Jubilee Congress of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) was inaugurated by Shri K.C. Pant, the then Minister for Energy, Govt. of India on 29th October, 1979 at New Delhi.
  • Diamond Jubilee Session of the Board was inaugurated by Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India in 1987.
  • Platinum Jubilee year of CBIP was celebrated on completion of its 75 years in 2002.
  • CIGRE Administrative Council Meeting was held at Bangalore in 2005.
  • 12th World Water Congress of IWRA was organised at New Delhi in 2005.
  • Two Decades of Geosynthetics in India was celebrated at New Delhi during 2006.
  • World Tunnel Congress held at Agra in 19-25 September 2008. Her Excellencythe President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil addressed the participants (through  recorded video) and appreciated the efforts of CBIP.
  • Seminaron Solar Power was inaugurated by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Hon’ble Union Minister for MNRE. on 9th February 2010
  • International Conference on Accelerated Developmentof Hydropower in Bhutan was held at Thimpu, during 16-18th November 2010, which was inaugurated by Hon’ble  Prime Minister of Bhutan,  E. Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley.
  • Conclaves were organised by Ministry of Power, Govt. of India and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) with Central Board of Irrigation & Power as Co-organiser during 2007, 2008 & 2009 on Accelerated Development of Power Development in North Eastern Region and organised two conclaves on Contract Management.
  • 60th International Executive Council Meeting of ICID and 5th Asian Regional Conference held at New Delhiduring 6-11 December 2009, was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
  • India Water Week 2012 was inaugrated by Dr. Manmohan Singh Hon’ble Prime Minister of India heldfrom 10th to 14th April 2012 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
  • CIGRE- AORC Technical Meeting in February 2016 at Delhi
  • CIGRE- AORC Technical Meeting & Conference on ” Global Energy Transition Issues and Challenges”in May  2018 at Gangtok, Sikkim
  • Conferecne on “Renewable Energy Technology and its Integratio withGrid was inaugrated by Hon’ble shri Saurabh Patel, Minister Energy Govt. of Gujarat in December 2018.

CBIP has organised 2000 National and International Conferences on various advanced technologies, upto December 2018.
